They lived the unspeakable in ages in which innocence should be the norm and, therefore, these children have decided to isolate themselves from life indefinitely, escaping the shadow of a past marked by death and misfortune.they are in an unexplained coma for the purposes of a phenomenon identified as resignation syndrome , of which there is only one record in Sweden, a place that houses thousands of refugees.
The resignation syndrome
Sweden has faced the resignation syndrome for two decades, a very rare condition that only occurs in this country. Affects exclusively children and adolescents , children of refugees, between the ages of 7 and 18, are the most vulnerable.

They all converge on a particular feature, they come from regions and ethnic groups that have dealt with catastrophic situations, such as the former Soviet Union, the Balkans, gypsy children and Yazidis. They lived in a chaotic, extremely violent environment, which forced them to leave for Sweden where they are not assured of their residence. It is fear to return to their old life which has made them disconnect from the world in a way that scientists have failed to decipher: remaining immobile, incontinent, unable to eat and drink even if they do not suffer from any physical or neurological problem.
Sophie's case
Among the hundreds of cases that have been registered in the Nordic country since the decade of the nineties we find a recent one, Sophie's.She is a beautiful 9 year old girl who, if she loved to dance before, now lies inert in her bed.Doctors say she is physically healthy but Sophie has been asleep for two years now. She is fed with a tube that is attached to her nose and uses honeycombs, as well as other children who suffer from the same syndrome., the resignation syndrome.
«When I explain to parents what happens, I tell them that the world has been so terrible that Sophie She has turned back to herself and has disconnected the conscious part of her brain, ”says Dr.Elisabeth Hultcrantz, volunteer of Doctors of the World.
Her family came from the former Union Soviet where they were besieged by the local mafia. In one of many altercations, the small presence as their parents were beaten until her father fell unconscious, it was a traumatic situation that broke something inside her. «After a couple of days I noticed that she no longer played as much as she used to do with her sister,» recalls his mother.

Sophie was visibly affected, so, for her sake and for the good of all, the family left for Sweden where things were not simple either.Shortly after her arrival the girl heard in a meeting with the Migration Board that her family could not remain in the country. It was at that time that the symptoms of the syndrome of resignation began to manifest themselves. He didn't want to eat, nor did he utter any word, until he fell into a deep sleep from which he still does not return.
Hultcrantz examines her from time to time and ensures that her blood pressure It is quite normal, everything works normally, but Sophie has not shown signs of improvement in all this time, the girl still does not move. However, doctors keep the hope that the child regains the senses and the desire to live once your family feels really safe ura.
There is very little research on this disorder, the only thing that specialists can be fairly certain of is that it is a disease of the mind, present only in children of refugee families, and that it only happens in Sweden-although no one knows exactly why-.Children eventually recover, sometimes with relapses, but the big picture is limbo.
