We often decorate ourselves with objects that have a clear meaning: a medal, a symbol of peace, a star of David..., but sometimes we wear clothes that we don't know the meaning of simply because we like their aesthetics. We dedicate an article to unraveling the symbolism of one of these elements that are lately in fashion: the Tree of Life.On this occasion we wanted to find out what is that little horn that, especially in Italy, many people has been hanging on a chain: the Cornicello.
The true meaning of the Cornicello
In synthesis, the cornicello is an amulet which is supposed to protect from the "evil eye" .In all of Southern Italy and especially in Naples it is a symbol that many people wear around the neck.
The use of this symbol for protective purposes is not something new.In ancient times, in many cultures the horns were used as magical elements with false connotations. The horns combine a form falica, which makes them a fertility badge, and the offensive use that animals make of them symbolizing the strength and vigor of these. The oldest cornicellos imitate the twisted horns of an eland (taurotragus ), the largest antilope that exists and lives in sub-Saharan Africa.
In the Italian peninsula, in Roman times, an intifalo hung on the neck of children. This ornament with a falic form, was believed protected infants from misfortune and the evil eye .Historians believe that from those intifalos of antiquity derived the cornicello .
Another explanation to the magical power attributed to the cornicellos can be found in mythology. The little horn could be a powerful symbol against evil since it was believed that It represented the antlers broken from Amalthea , the goat that was Zeus's nurse .This one involuntarily broke a horn and to compensate for it, the god turned it into the "cornucopia" or "horn of plenty," which grants all wishes to its possessor.
It is usually used hanging on a chain and often accompanied by a small hand making the sign of the horns towards the ground, which as we saw in Lifestyle, is a gesture that is used in Italy to ward off bad luck.It is also believed to protect from the "bosses" and can attract good luck.in a pendant, it is very common to see women look in the form of earrings.
There is a variant of the cornicello that is red and in Italy they call it « Corno Rosso » The most expensive are usually coral, but there are also simpler ones made with other materials. The "corno rosso" for those who believe in this superstition, attracts good fortune , since this color symbolizes also the force and the vital fire.
