Danielle Hulshizer's story
Danielle began to experience the first symptoms of hypersomnia or Sleeping Beauty syndrome when she was a teenager .At first she and her parents thought that her continued tiredness was due to the strong pace of life she had.Danielle was a professional skater, so her workouts could last up to 12 hours a day.
It was when Danielle stopped training and moved to Georgia that she realized that her tiredness was not normal and there was nothing to justify it.The young woman could sleep 12 continuous hours and dawn as or more tired than the previous day .In this sense, Danielle explains:
"You don't get up with energy and ready to start (...) You get up feeling as tired as you were 12 hours ago when you lay down to sleep"
After seeking help and attending the consultation with several medical professionals, Danielle is diagnosed 14 years later with hypersomnia .Now the problem was how to deal with this condition.
Patients suffering from this condition see their lives affected in all possible fields .Lack of energy and rest makes the person unable to study, work and hard lead a stable relationship.
At first Danielle was treated with stimulants to keep her awake Sooner rather than later than the remedy was worse than the disease and that these medicines caused her terrible headaches, trembling and she felt equally tired.
Treatment of Flumazenil
After much searching, Danielle met with doctor David Rye , neurologist at the Emory Sleep Clinic in Atlanta, who is also a specialist in this type of case .Rye and his team have investigated this condition for many years and have reached the conclusion of that patients suffering from hypersomnia have a greater sensitivity to the effects of Neurotransmitters known as GABA molecules .
In most people these transmitters act as a natural regulator of daily activity, while in the pac With hypersomnia, the effects of GABA molecules are completely uncontrolled.
Based on these studies, Dr.Rye began an experimental treatment and, in fact, Danielle was the second person in the United States to take it.It is about giving the affected person a medicine called Flumazenil , which is used to remove people from anesthesia.
The results have been surprising, Danielle explains:
«15 minutes after putting a tablet under my tongue that wall that I thought I had throughout my life in the brain disappeared (...) I was able to think clearly, to communicate and talk to me , to have a conversation with someone »
This treatment, although not yet approved, seems to be a ray of hope for those affected by the Sleeping Beauty syndrome .
