Lifestyle invites you to fly over the Amazon rainforest, to see closely part of what happens in it.
The Castanheira case
In August 2014, the Brazilian Federal Police and prosecutors of the Brazilian Institute of the Environment (IBAMA) started an operation called “Castanheira”, whose objective was to dismantle a band, responsible for approximately 10% of the deforestation occurred in the Brazilian Amazon during the last two years.

The band, made up of some fifteen members and whose ramifications reached the city of São Paulo , illegally occupied lots wooded in the Amazonian states of Para, they cut it down and burned, and then they sold the land-with false papers-to farmers to be used as grasslands .
It is estimated that, before issuing capture orders, this group deforested 3,400 hectares of forest weekly , an amount that is not negligible. The operation concluded in February of this year when the leader of the band was captured, Ezequiel Antonio Castanha .
Some background of the victim
The Amazon, The Amazon River basin has about six million square kilometers, mostly in Brazilian territory, although it also touches countries like Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, Ecuador and Venezuela.

It is the most extensive tropical forest in the world and is considered one of the ecoregions with the greatest biodiversity on the planet: 150,000 species of plants, more than 2,000 birds and mammals (one fifth of the world's birds) and about 2.5 million insects. It also contains the most abundant river, and its title of lung of the planet is no exaggeration.

That is why in 2011 the Amazon was declared one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
Others guilty of its disappearance
But this title has not served much to the siege of other kinds of gangs and dangers that have been stalking her in the last fifty years.Other factors, in addition to Ezequiel Antonio Castanha, that contribute to the accelerated destruction of the Amazonian ecosystems are mining, the exploitation of valuable timber, the construction of roads and hydroelectric dams, colonization and new urbanisms (which also threaten the existence of numerous indigenous peoples that still resist their forests), livestock and intensive agriculture (especially that dedicated to soybeans).
An example of the seriousness of this situation is reflected in these Greenpeace figures: in a three-year period deforested 70,000 km square meters of forest for soybean cultivation only.
Consequences of deforestation
The increasing deforestation of the Amazon brings negative changes in the global climate, increased CO2 and decrease in the production of oxygen, pollution, loss of natural biodiversity (extinction of species) and cultural (disappearance of indigenous peoples), destruction of soils, loss of aquifers, etc.

In the long term it means the impoverishment of quality of life for all who inhabit this planet.
Rescuing the Amazon
The solution is not to seek and punish guilty parties, but apply alternative models and sustainable development in the Amazon, which in fact already exist, such as agroforestry systems , the exploitation of attractive local species, such as e l seje oil, the palm of palm plantations, the chestnuts of Brazil, the extraction of rubber, etc.In this way we will guarantee that the Amazon continues to be one of the seven natural wonders of this unique wonder that is the Earth.
