Since 1981, on November 25, the Day of non-violence against women is commemorated. What not everyone knows is that this day destined to denounce and claim abuse against the female gender, it was also declared as such by the UN to remember the Mirabal sisters, three Dominican activists killed for defending their ideals with a warrior spirit.
The murder of the Mirabal sisters, faces of violence
In the political sphere they were known as the Butterflies, but let's not be confused by the delicacy of the nickname. These women became the headache of dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo , who mistakenly believed that he would end the offensive by ordering his liquidation.
The sisters Mirabal, Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa, were born in the province of Salcedo, in the Dominican Republic, in a home full of privileges. They were the daughters of a successful businessman who fell out of favor with Rafa's arrival Leonidas Trujillo to power in 1930.That was how the times of prosperity were behind with the consolidation of the Trujillista dictatorship. His family was stripped of property and material assets in the blink of an eye.

Staying idly while the country fell apart was not a position that the Mirabal sisters could afford. No more but, with all the risks involved in opposing the regime, the Butterflies joined a group of political dissidents to act actively against the dictatorship, known as the Political Group June 14.
The relentless political activism of the Mirabal sisters sent them to jail several times. On one of those reprimands, Minerva and Maria Teresa, they were raped and tortured by their custodians. The husbands of these women neither did they escape the brutal punishments of the Truji dictatorial regime llo, also becoming political prisoners.
On May 18, 1960, Minerva and Maria Teresa were sentenced to three years imprisonment for violating state security. But they , unlike their husbands, they would spend a brief stay in jail, as the Trujillo government prepared a much worse punishment for the Mirabal sisters.

November 25, 1960 Trujillo He sent secret police officers to intercept the car where Patria, Minerva and Maria were moving back to visit their husbands in prison. The three sisters were forced to enter the back posts of a Volkswagen, to be taken to a desolate place, on a highway in the province.
There, women between 26 and 36 years of age d, mothers, were strangled, beaten and thrown by a ravine aboard a vehicle, in order to make the crime scene pass as a car accident. But nobody believed this version of the facts.
After 10 years of political activism, after his death, the will of the Mirabal sisters took on a supernatural force that ended up waking civil society; the tragedy gave them the push they needed to defend the country from the dictatorship. As a consequence, on May 30, 1961 the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo was killed by seven machine gun impacts, putting an end to a dark period in the history of Dominican Republic.
