The legend of the Devil's Peak: a competition between the devil and a pirate
Cape Town, one of the most important cities in South Africa, has a backdrop mountainous amphitheater .The most characteristic formation is «La Mesa», recognizable by its flat plateau that measures about three kilometers from end to end and to its left is the Devil's Peak (Devil's Peak) .It has an approximate altitude of about 1,000 meters and is accessible by hiking from several points. So you can find several historic military forts and some canon batteries that were destined, decades ago, to defend the city.

Since 1700 a legend about Pico del Diablo is transmitted from generation to generation every time that the fog that emerges from the sea covers the mountains that surround Cape Town. They say that a pirate named Jan Van Hunks settled in the city with the intention of abandoning his previous criminal activity. He married and lived in a small house at the foot of the mountain.

Jan Van Hunks had a habit that his wife hated: he was a heavy smoker of a pipe. The woman can't day to resist it and every time he lit the pipe he sent it out of the house. The pirate took the habit of walking mountain up while lighting the contraption and sitting in the same place to smoke Quietly contemplating the views of the bay.One day, when he arrived at his favorite place, he found a very strange man sitting on it.He was dressed in black and wearing a huge hat that He covered his face completely.
Surprisingly, the stranger greeted him by his name and asked for tobacco. He sat next to him and began a conversation that soon led to smoking. Jan Van Hunks was a bit boastful and liked to show off the amount of tobacco he could consume. The man in black told him that he could smoke a lot more without arriving to feel bad.The pirate could not resist him and challenged him to a competition .

They smoked so much that soon the smoke surrounded them and climbed up the mountain .The stranger began to feel ill, became nervous and the hat fell from his head.At that moment Van Hunks could see his face : was facing the devil himself. This seeing that the pirate, a mere mortal, was beating him made a lightning strike that erased them both from the face of the Earth .
A Van Hunks was not seen again , but every time the fog submerges the mountain formations of Devil's Peak and Table Mountain the people of Cape Town say that the Devil and the pirate have returned to their positions in the mountains and resumed the competition.
