The Collyer brothers, victims of Diogenes Syndrome
The Collyer brothers were not exactly millionaires but they did have their account a considerable fortune . Homer and Langley Collyer were born in New York in 1881 and 1884 respectively. They studied at Columbia University and graduated in law maritime and chemical engineering but they practiced their professions for a short time since the money here given by their parents allowed them to live on incomes without doing so.

His father, a doctor , was already considered a eccentric, as he moved to work at the hospital, where he went to see a couple of days a week, paddling in a canoe.Dr.Collyer bought a house on Fifth Avenue, corner with 128th Street, to which the family moved.Years later the marriage separated and in the red brick building the woman was left living with her children, who never married. In 1923 the father died and in 1929 the mother, leaving Homer and Langley all their property.

The tragedy developed in the house on Fifth Avenue. The brothers became" convulsive accumulators " and they piled up in the four floors of his house more than 200 tons of objects and debris .Four years after the death of the mother Homer lost his sight and Langley dedicated himself to taking care of him, being the only one He went out to the street .His house was in the Harlem neighborhood and due to poverty during the time of the depression, several people had tried to steal .The brothers started to accumulate books, diaries and everything they could think of that they might need . They covered most windows and doors and made traps throughout the house to catch intruders.

On March 21, 1947 the police tried to enter in the house notified by the neighbors Since they had not seen any of the two brothers for a long time, it was impossible to cross the entrance and the windows were clogged with mountains of newspapers so the firefighters had to enter through the roof. After 6 hours they found Homer's lifeless body sitting in an armchair . They didn't find the other brother until 18 days later , such was the amount of accumulated objects They had to move 136 tons of material to find it and that which was a few meters from the first one. Langley had died crushed by a landslide when he tried to go to his brother's side that was blind and paralyzed at the time.. Homer had died of hunger and thirst .

Among the things they took from the house there were more than 190,000 newspapers, numerous musical instruments including several grand pianos, several x-ray machines of his father, thousands of books and records, umbrellas , sewing machines and car engines. The case of the Collyer brothers, in medicine, gave name to a syndrome very similar to that of Diogenes and is a typical example of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The property of the brothers passed to the hands of New York City and in the place where he occupied his house there is a park in its memory.
