Surely many of you have gone through this experience or remember with amazement that in adolescence you were able to live with smells that today you consider unbearable .In Lifestyle in the post about why we can't smell ourselves, we talk about the phenomenon of fatigue or olfactory accommodation , but in the case of teenagers, according to a study by the University of Aarhus in Denmark, that is not the reason. Then, why teenagers are not affected by bad smell?
Bad smell and teenagers
The phenomenon of the apparent olfactory "difference" between teenagers and adults has seemed interesting enough to researchers at the University of Aarhus in Denmark to make a study of their possible motives .
Apparently teenagers are less sensitive to or Lords such as sweat, cigarette smoke or soap and yet their noses quickly detect aromas of the so-called "junk food" or tomato sauce. The researchers chose more than 400 volunteers under 50 and subjected them to different smells.
The study participants were subjected to a multitude of different aromas and all of them , without differentiation by age, were able to recognize odors like coffee, gasoline or fish , however, from there a generation gap opened up. adults had a "culture of smells" that they didn't possess.young and were able to distinguish between different aromatic species, or between basic food odors such as bread or lemon. They could also distinguish mu chos more unpleasant smells than the 172 volunteers who were between 12 and 18 years old.
1 in 7 teenagers could not identify the smell of sweat and 10% of them I do not notice the smell of cigarettes, while among adults the percentage of non-identification of these odors was 8% and 3% respectively. Also the young people were less sensitive to the smell of soap, although the difference is not so significant. However, the percentages took a turn when it came to distinguish the smell of fried tomato, various sweets or cola soft drinks .These smells distinguished them perfectly and with a Substantial difference from adults!
The result of the study led by Alexander Fjaelstad, a professor at the University of Aarhus, was published in the journal "Chemical Senses" and in the Fjaelstad gives a possible explanation to the phenomenon of the imperturbability in the face of bad smell. He thinks it is because young people need to get used to smells for years before starting to register them in prominent places on their mental list of odors. For him, Children and young people, lack the specific knowledge needed to detect certain odors, since these are acquired and accumulate throughout life .
Therefore, until teenagers acquire the ability to detect and name those "bad smells", their families, unfortunately, will have to endure the effluviums of their rooms if they are not able to educate them and make them understand that your body has changed and should maximize hygiene, t Anto body as the clothes and shoes they use.
