If you like stories about writing, today we want to present the curious story that tells how the cuneiform writing was deciphered, the writing used by the inhabitants of ancient Mesopotamia.It was thanks to the work of a young teacher of only 27 years, Georg Friedrich Grotefend.
Cuneiform writing
Cuneiform writing is considered one of the oldest writings in the world.The signs were written by scribes on clay tablets with a beveled cane and the occasional one on metal tablets.In its beginning it had about 900 signs and later no less than 400 .They used it to write Sumerian , Babylonian, Assyrian, Hittite, Luwita, Hurrian and Uranium .
The Assyrian king Asurbanipal was a great fan of collecting written documents; in fact, under the rubble of Senaquerif Palace, the library was found with nothing more and nothing less than 22,000 tablets of clay; the largest collection found of this type of writing.

Friedrich and the anecdote of the bet
The young Friedrich of tan only 27 years old was in a pub with a friend, having drank some more he made a stupid bet. He promised to find the key to decipher the cuneiform writing of the ancient Persians...but for that it only had a bad copies of inscriptions found in Persepolis .
However, in just one year presented his first results at the Academy of Sciences of Gottinghen : «Articles for the interpretation of persepolitan cuneiform writing».Studies that are still of crucial importance today.
How did Grotefend do it? What were your main findings? Let's go in parts
- He realized that Persian inscriptions have 3 types of cuneiform writings .
- I read everything that the Greeks had written about the ancient Persians and about the kings of Pesepolis.
- There was a group of signs that were repeated So much so that it was sure that the word accounreyrey.

- He discovered that the signs were scriptures and not an ornament
- That only could be recorded on solid matter because they had no round shape
- That the cribs went to 4 directions from top to bottom and from left to right.
- That it should read from left to right
It was over 30 years until real discoveries were made Significant minds and Grotefend's discoveries had some errors but remember that he was the first one! The investigations of French Emile Burneuf and Christian Lassen they were not published until 1836.
