A study carried out by several universities revealed that suicide rates are higher in countries that are considered the happiest in the world , why should this situation?
The University of San Francisco, the English University of Warwick and Hamilton College jointly conducted a study to determine which are the countries with the highest suicide rates and their possible causes.
The happiest countries?
One of the most relevant and interesting data the study showed is that European countries like Denmark, Ireland, Switzerland and Iceland , despite having high standards of quality of life and being considered the happiest in the world, have the highest suicide rates.
The purpose of the studywas to discover and determine why this situation is so paradoxical .The results were published in the Journal of Economic Behavior&Organization, under the name of «Dark contrasts: the paradox of high suicide rates in happy places» .
The causes of this phenomenon
According to researchers , one of the possible causes of this phenomenon is precisely the high standards of quality of life .Living in a country where most reach their goals and are happy, makes those who do not achieve it so easily get depressed and end up taking their own lives.
One of those responsible for the research, the professor at Warwick University, Andrew Oswald , explains:
"Discontented people may feel particularly tired of life in places happy. These contrasts may increase the risk of suicide. If we humans are exposed to change In humor , comparisons with others can make our existence more tolerable in an environment where others are completely unhappy ”
The results of the study seem to show that people who tend to compare their own well-being with that of others citizens are more likely to fall into depressions that lead to suicide.
Another interesting fact that the study revealed, is that people living in areas with higher altitudes , such as: mountains, are more likely to commit suicide.Despite the fact that the data obtained throw this premise, the causes are still unknown and the direct relationship between this factor and taking one's own life.
What do you think are the causes that lead to more suicides being discussed in the cataloged countries? As "the happiest in the world"?
